Urvakan

A white draped figure with many outstretched arms and heads hanging inside an arched pavilion lit in violet

Urvakan means ghost in Armenian. For the festival of that name, held at Yerevan’s old Children’s Railway, Galstyan hung a ceramic figure in the park pavilion: a many-headed ghost, a human-shaped hydra hovering over the festival like the many faces of the railway’s past.

A second work, made of numbered plates, came from his childhood memories of travelling by train: the rhythm of a life measured by repeated numbers, scales and timetables.
